EU to impose sanctions on Belarus: EU Diplomat
The EU will tighten sanctions on Belarus because of Minsk's role in the Ukrainian crisis.
EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano said, on Friday, that the European Union's sanctions against Russia will also affect Belarus' leadership because of Minsk's role in the Ukrainian crisis.
Western nations have stepped up sanctions against Russia as it launched a military operation in Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday in response to demands for assistance from the self-declared Donbass republics, which have accused Kiev of escalating shootings in recent weeks.
In a press conference, Stano added that "part of the sanctions are also targeted in Belarusian leadership because Belarus is a collaborator in this brazen aggression against Ukraine and they will be targeted as well."
Financial penalties against Russian banks, sanctions in the energy, transportation, and high technology sectors, and the suspension of visa facilitation arrangements for holders of Russian diplomatic and official passports are among the EU sanctions.
The United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, as well as the European Union, have all sanctioned Russia over Ukraine. Several EU countries, including Latvia and Lithuania, have suspended the issuing of visas to all Russian citizens, while Germany has terminated the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline certification process.
