The former Grand Mufti of Syria, Ahmad Hassoun, was arrested by Security Forces at the Damascus International Airport, Al Mayadeen sources confirmed.
According to the source, Sheikh Hassoun was arrested while trying to leave Syria for Jordan through Damascus International Airport to undergo surgery in Amman. After clearing immigration and making his way to the duty-free area, he was detained by General Security officers and taken to an unknown location, after which a photo of him blindfolded appeared on social media.
Despite receiving official permission to leave Syria, Sheikh Hassoun was still arrested, and according to the source, he had been assured there were no restrictions on his travel and had relied on that approval before departing.
Previously, the former Grand Mufti confirmed that a group of armed men in General Security uniforms entered his house and robbed it, while another group entered his other home in Aleppo and occupied it while preventing relatives from taking their personal belongings from the house.
