Greece sentences 2 nationals to prison over Turkey espionage
A Greek court in Rhodes sentenced two Greeks to five years and four years in prison over spying for Turkey.
Two Greek nationals have been sentenced to prison by a Rhodes island court over spying for Turkey, Greece's ERT reported Wednesday.
A 36-year-old man who worked at the Turkish consulate on the island was sentenced to five years in prison. A 53-year-old man who worked as a cook on a ferry was sentenced to four years in prison and conditionally released.
The Turkish foreign ministry criticized the judgment, saying the court had "acted with prejudice."
The second defendant had been working on a ferry from Rhodes to Kastellorizo, which lies just off the coast of Turkey.
The two men had been arrested last year, and reports that came out at the time suggested the second defendant, the cook, was passing information, which included details of the positions of Greek Navy ships to the other suspect.
Kastellorizo, the region in which the ferry was in, lies in disputed waters that sparked tensions between Ankara and Athens.
