An explosion at a hotel in the Khost province in southeast Afghanistan killed three people and injured seven others, the Khost province's media office said on Monday.

The cause of the blast is still unclear, however, the region that borders Pakistan has been a hotspot for violence between different factions and terrorist organizations.

The province's media office said Pakistani nationals from the bordering Waziristan region were among the casualties.

The Russian news agency Sputnik said an airstrike targeted the hotel, citing local sources. However, officials in the province denied the news affirming that investigations on the cause of the blast are still ongoing, as authorities seal off the site of the attack.

Earlier on June 8, a bombing targetted a funeral ceremony of the deputy governor of the Badakhshan province at a local mosque claiming the lives of at least 16 people from the gatherings, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported.

The attack also resulted in the injury of 6 others, according to the Afghan news agency, Khaama Press.

The deputy governor was assassinated in a suicide car bomb attack two days ago by IS-K. ISIS had earlier claimed responsibility for the car bomb attack and wrote via Telegram that "its fighters succeeded in detonating a bomb, targeting the Taliban's deputy governor [of Badakhshan], Mawlawi Nazar Ahmad Ahmadi."
