During his historic visit to Tehran, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel was welcomed warmly by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a ceremony at the Saadabad Historical and Cultural Complex on Monday.

At the airport, the Cuban president was welcomed by Iran’s Minister of Health and Medical Education Bahram Einollahi at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

This marks the first visit by a Cuban president after late leader Fidel Castro, who visited Iran 22 years ago.

Both nations have signed documents and memoranda of understanding in an effort to enhance and further bilateral relations and cooperation.

The seven agreements signed today entailed joint cooperation in energy, agriculture, health, medical sciences, technology, and communications, a strategic agreement on vaccine production and the exchange of medical expertise.

Raisi visited Cuba in June

Separate meetings with several Iranian authorities are also anticipated to take place alongside a tour of an exhibition demonstrating the latest joint achievements reached in cooperation in the medical and pharmaceutical fields.

Raisi traveled to Havana back in June and met with Diaz Canel, and signed six agreements to expand bilateral economic, political and judicial cooperation.

At the time, Cuba was Raisi's third stop in his Latin America tour following Nicaragua and Venezuela. The two presidents met at the Plaza de la Revolución, after an official reception for the president in the courtyard of the palace, where the Iranian and Cuban national anthems were played.
