Iran, Russia call for urgent UN meeting on Hamas leader assassination
Iran's UN envoy Saeed Iravani affirmed Iran's readiness to respond decisively to Israeli violations of international law.
Russian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy announced on Wednesday that Russia has called for an extraordinary UN Security Council meeting to address the assassination of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh.
"At the request of Iran, supported by China, Algeria, and Russia, our chairmanship has scheduled an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the assassination of Hamas politburo chief I. Haniyeh in Tehran for 4:00 p.m. New York time (11:00 p.m. Moscow time) on July 31," Polyanskiy said.
Iran's UN envoy Saeed Iravani has likewise requested an urgent meeting to discuss the events and affirmed Iran's readiness to respond decisively to Israeli violations of international law.
"We will not hesitate to use our right to respond urgently and decisively to the Zionist entity's crime," Iravani said.
"We call for an urgent Security Council meeting to discuss Israeli aggression," he added.
"This crime would not have happened without an American green light and intelligence support to carry out the operation," he further noted.

Earlier this morning, the IRGC announced the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh alongside one of his guards in Tehran.
Hamas later confirmed Haniyeh's martyrdom, noting that he was killed in a "treacherous Zionist airstrike on his residence in Tehran."
Iran's IRGC later said, "We are studying the dimensions of the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, and will announce the results of the investigation later."
An op-ed published in the Financial Times earlier warned that the recent aggression against Lebanon and the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh could send the region into war.
