Iran condemns Israeli aggression on Lebanon, urges UN action
Iran has condemned the Israeli attack on Beirut, urging the UN Security Council and UN secretary-general to take immediate action and hold 'Israel' accountable for its violations of international law and humanitarian principles.
Following the Israeli occupation's blatant aggression against Beirut's Southern Suburb, Iran's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani sent two identical letters to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UN Security Council urging them to condemn "Israel's" aggression against Beirut, Lebanon.
Reportedly, the letters noted that "Members of the Security Council must not be fooled by Israel's distorted narratives," adding that "the latest act of aggression and cowardly attacks by the Israeli regime today, 30 July 2024, targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon, demonstrates that this regime has no respect for the rules and principles of international law."
The Iranian representative urged the UN Security Council to unequivocally and immediately condemn these actions and take swift measures to prevent their recurrence. They stressed that Israel must be held accountable for these atrocities.Iranian diplomat Iravani further stressed that "the Security Council must also take immediate action in response to this criminal act to ensure that this aggression, which threatens regional peace and security, is not repeated. Israel must be held accountable for these atrocities and cannot remain unpunished."
Iravani then explained that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through the immediate and "permanent end to Israeli occupation, aggression, and genocidal crimes." Iran also called on the Security Council to take decisive action in accordance with its responsibilities under the UN Charter.
Moreover, the Iranian diplomat underscored that "this includes compelling the Israeli regime to immediately and unconditionally end the genocide and aggression against Gaza, end the violation of relevant Security Council resolutions, withdraw its occupation forces from all Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese territories, and cease its aggression. and military attacks on the territory of Lebanon or other countries in the region."
In conclusion, the letters asserted that "the Israeli regime must be compelled to fully comply with its obligations under Security Council resolutions 1559 (2004) and 1701 (2006)."
Israeli aggression targets residential bldg in Beirut Southern Suburb
At least one civilian, a woman, was killed and sixty-eight others were wounded in an Israeli aggression on Haret Hreik, in the Southern Suburb of Beirut, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported.
Among the injured, five are in critical condition, while the rest of the injuries range between moderate and minor, the ministry added.
