The registration process for candidates vying for the imminent Iranian snap presidential elections commenced on Thursday, May 30.

Nominees began registering for the upcoming early elections at a ceremony held at the Interior Ministry in Tehran on Thursday morning.

In further detail, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi spoke to the assembled reporters during the opening ceremony for candidate enrollment.

In his address, Vahidi extended condolences once more for the loss of President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions in the tragic helicopter crash, affirming that "despite the significant loss, our nation navigated through this crisis with resilience, ensuring the continuity of our country's affairs without interruption."

The Interior Minister initiated the official process for the snap presidential elections last weekend by issuing a directive instructing governors of provinces and cities throughout Iran to establish election executive committees within the coming three days.

The registration period for candidates, which commenced today, will run until June 3.

President Raisi, accompanied by Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, two senior local officials, a security officer, and three flight crew members, was aboard a helicopter that crashed in mountainous terrain near Iran’s Varzaqan region on May 19, following an inauguration ceremony for a dam on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Following the helicopter crash, a council of leaders from the three branches of the Iranian government convened a meeting and agreed on June 28 as the date for holding early presidential elections in the country.

It should be noted that while Raisi's term was set to expire in August 2025, the candidate who wins the next presidential election will serve a full term of four years.
