Iran is preparing to host Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani, who was quoted by Russia’s RIA news agency on Monday.
“Putin's trip to Tehran is currently being worked out, preparations are underway,” Mohajerani said. The Kremlin has not yet issued an official confirmation of the visit.
If confirmed, this would mark another significant moment in the evolving Iran-Russia strategic partnership, which has gained momentum in recent years.
Putin’s potential second visit since 2022
Putin last visited Iran in 2022, where he held talks with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and Islamic Republic Sayyed Ali Khamenei. That visit was his first trip outside the former Soviet Union after the start of the war in Ukraine in February of the same year.
Since then, Moscow and Tehran have expanded cooperation across military, political, and economic spheres.
Both countries signed a 20-year strategic partnership treaty earlier this year. Notably, the agreement does not include a mutual defense clause, differentiating it from some of Moscow’s other alliances.
Araghchi conveys Sayyed Khamenei’s message to Putin
In April, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a written message from Sayyed Khamenei to Putin during a meeting in Moscow. The letter expressed Tehran’s positions on key bilateral, regional, and international issues and reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to deepening ties with Russia.
Araghchi highlighted the importance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty as a cornerstone of cooperation and reiterated Iran’s resolve to expand relations across all levels.
Putin welcomed the message and stressed the importance of strategic cooperation, calling Iran-Russia ties a stabilizing factor for the region and a mechanism to protect shared national interests.
Coordination on regional and global issues
In their April meeting, Araghchi and Putin discussed a wide range of topics, including the conflict in Ukraine, nuclear talks, and broader international developments.
Putin’s anticipated visit is seen as a potential opportunity to advance discussions on regional security, sanctions coordination, and joint diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East and beyond.
