Iranian FM in Syria to facilitate peace
Iran's Foreign Minister says he is in Syria to help foster peace and security between Damascus and Ankara.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's Foreign Minister, stated that he was in Syria to help foster peace and security between Damascus and Turkey.
In an interview on Saturday, Amir-Abdollahian stated that the trip followed his recent trip to Turkey and that it was critical to speak with Syrian officials as well.
Regional developments need the Islamic Republic of Iran's constant constructive involvement in preventing a new crisis in the region, according to the Foreign Minister.
He stated that his journey to Syria was intended in part at promoting peace and security between Syria and Turkey, as both countries have close ties with Iran.
According to Amir-Abdollahian, the upcoming trip would include bilateral talks on numerous regional and international problems, as well as meetings with Syrian leaders, including President Bashar Al-Assad.
Iran's FM heads to Syria after Turkey
On Saturday, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian led a group from Tehran to Damascus, Syria's capital.
According to Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanani, the senior diplomat intends to discuss mutual ties and share views with Syrian officials on regional and international trends.
Amir-Abdollahian noted on his Twitter account in May that Syrian President Bashar Al-visit Assad's to Tehran and conversations with the Iranian leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi marked a new chapter in Syria and Iran's strategic partnership.
Iran is keen to strengthen bilateral relations with Syria, according to the Foreign Minister, who said that the Islamic Republic will continue to stand beside Syria in the battle against terrorism and extremism.
Iran is “determined to enhance our bilateral relationship with the triumph of Syria's resistance,” the FM said.
Regional tour
Before Syria, Amir-Abdollahian visited Ankara to meet his Turkish counterpart. A press conference held between the Iranian and the Turkish foreign ministers in Ankara saw Hossein Amir-Abdollahian dubb "Israel" as the number one enemy of the Muslim world and Mevlut Cavusoglu denounce the unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran.
“We consider the fraudulent Israeli regime as the number one enemy of Muslims and the Islamic world,” the top Iranian diplomat said, praising Turkey’s position in backing the Palestinian cause.
Regarding the sanctions against Iran, Amir-Ambdollahian briefed his Turkish counterpart about High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell's visit to Tehran and their agreement to continue the Vienna talks to lift the sanctions.

“We hope that in the new round of the negotiations between Iran and the opposite parties we would achieve a final agreement, if the United States and three European countries act realistically,” Amir-Abdollahian stated.
On his part, Cavusoglu denounced the unilateral sanctions against Iran and hoped that the 2015 nuclear deal would resume, according to Anadolu Agency.
