Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi calls on Iraqi voters to choose representatives with sentiment and dedication to the Iraqi national identity.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has called on Iraqi voters to choose representatives with sentiment and dedication to the Iraqi national identity.
As the countdown begins to Iraq’s parliamentary elections on Oct. 10, 25 million voters in Iraq are expected to express their national authenticity and choose representatives with sentiment and dedication to the Iraqi national identity.
That message is being reiterated by Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Iraq’s Prime Minister, via tweets and public statements, simultaneously calling Iraqi voters to turn out in big numbers on Election Day.
In a tweet, Al-Kadhimi drew attention to “submitting a project to consider October 3, Iraq's Independence Day, and its accession as a founding member of the League of Nations, as a national holiday, in an effort to consolidate the unifying national identity".
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert affirmed that 800 UN observers will participate in the Iraqi elections.
In a joint press conference with Basra Governor Asaad Al-Eidani, Hennis-Plasschaert stressed that these elections are important for Iraq and are the first step on a long road.
She added that the current mission is different from previous ones, as the current mission will provide massive technical assistance.
Al-Kadhimi held an extensive meeting on Saturday with the Supreme Security Committee for Elections and the Independent High Electoral Commission.
After the meeting, the Iraqi PM stressed that "everyone in Iraq is counting on the integrity of the electoral process, " detailing that Iraq has greatly suffered from corruption and fraud in every electoral process.
On his account, Iraqi President Barham Salih expressed that the upcoming Iraqi elections will be a major turning point, paving the way for a review of the current governing system.
Salih added that reform is necessary and the current system is unable to provide a free and dignified life for Iraqis.
