Iraqis Cast Their Votes in Early Parliamentary Elections
Polling stations in Iraq open their doors to about 25 million voters with tight security measures.
Today, Iraqi voters begin casting their votes in the country's early parliamentary elections.
From 7:00 am till 6:00 pm today, the doors of polling stations will be open to about 25 million eligible voters, according to the Independent High Electoral Commission.
The elections are held under international supervision and are the first under the new electoral law, which divided the country into 83 electoral districts.
The Supreme Security Committee announced the closure of airports and land ports Saturday evening in order to secure the electoral process.
The main checkpoints between the Iraqi governorates were closed around midnight, but the committee confirmed that there are no permanent curfews in cities.
The Independent High Electoral Commission announced that the turnout in the special vote on Friday reached 69%. The vote included about 1.2 million voters from security services, displaced residents, and prisoners.
