The Israeli occupation has proposed that Syria help deliver humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip, according to a diplomatic source quoted by "Israel's" i24news on Thursday evening.
The offer was raised during meetings between Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and senior Israeli officials with counterparts from the government of interim Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, i24news journalist Amichai Stein reported.
According to the source familiar with the contacts, the initiative suggested that Syria supply humanitarian aid, which the Israeli occupation would then transfer into Gaza, either via airdrops or truck convoys.
Talks linked to emerging security dialogue
The approach comes amid modest progress in negotiations toward a potential security arrangement between the two countries, i24news said. In recent weeks, Dermer has held several meetings with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, under the auspices of US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack.
Over the past months, the Israeli occupation has also allowed states with which it has no diplomatic ties, including Indonesia, to send humanitarian aid into Gaza, the report added.
It remains unclear how Damascus responded to the proposal, but observers view it as another sign of tentative rapprochement between the two parties.
US interest and broader implications
US officials are reportedly keen to see progress on a security framework between Syria and the Israeli regime ahead of the UN General Assembly session in two weeks, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and interim President al-Sharaa are expected to attend, i24 News noted.
Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, who recently visited Syria and met al-Sharaa, told i24news that at one point, the Syrian leader even referenced the normalization accords. “It’s obviously early, but who would have believed a Syrian president would raise that — if Assad were alive, it would never have happened,” Wilson said.
'Stability unachievable under Israeli aggression'
In a related context, al-Shibani had earlier said that the Israeli attacks on Syria and Qatar represent a blatant violation of international law, in statements made during a press conference in Damascus with his Croatian counterpart.
He also stated that "stability in the region cannot be achieved amid the ongoing Israeli assaults," calling on the international community to hold "Israel" accountable for these violations.
The Israeli occupation continues its aggression against Syria through persistent bombardment and the occupation of territories despite ongoing talks between Syria and the Zionist entity. Simultaneously, "Israel" launched an assault on the Qatari capital, Doha, in a failed attempt to assassinate leaders of the Hamas movement, which resulted in the negotiating delegation surviving and several others being killed.
In a coordinated operation between the Israeli occupation military and its internal security agency, Shin Bet, an airstrike was carried out on the Qatari capital of Doha on September 9, with officials claiming the operation targeted the senior leadership of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
On September 8, Israeli fighter jets launched missiles from Lebanese northern airspace and conducted air raids on the countryside of Homs, Syria, late Monday, as SANA confirmed, with no details provided regarding the nature of the targets or the extent of damage and casualties.
