Kanaani condemns Graham after he urged to nuke Gaza
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanani, condemns US Senator Lindsey Graham's call for a nuclear strike on the Gaza Strip and reaffirms Tehran's position on the development of nuclear weapons.
Nasser Kanani, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, described US Senator Lindsey Graham's suggestion of using a nuclear bomb on Gaza as "horrific" and stated it "violates all international laws, norms, and human rights resolutions," in a statement made on Tuesday.
On X, Kanani further noted that the Senator's remarks "reflect the brutality of those who advocate for war and disregard human rights and international resolutions."
He highlighted that "the United States has a history of using nuclear weapons while merely claiming to defend human rights," urging "the international community to condemn American support for the Zionist entity and confront these demonic statements to prevent the continuation of the humanitarian disaster and genocide being committed in Gaza."
Iran reaffirms commitment to peaceful nuclear program
Yesterday, Kanaani emphasized during his weekly press briefing that Iran's official position on weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) has been consistently communicated by senior Iranian officials and noted that the doctrine remains unchanged.
"Based on our principled approach, Iran has a clear fatwa from the Supreme Leader that prohibits the use of inhumane weapons, and we also believe that these weapons pose a threat to the international community," he noted.
Kanaani highlighted that in the West Asia region, the Israeli regime is the only side that has not joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
In parallel, the spokesperson expressed optimism that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will uphold its impartiality in handling Iran's nuclear activities, enabling Tehran to sustain constructive engagement with the UN nuclear watchdog.
He mentioned that ongoing negotiations aim to address outstanding issues, and both parties agreed to continue consultations following IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi's recent visit to Iran, which Tehran assesses to be a positive step.
Kanaani emphasized that discussions between Iran and the IAEA have seen positive progress when the IAEA chief approached the issues in a technical manner, which was hindered when the IAEA adopted a "political approach" toward Iran.
The official affirmed that Iran remains committed to advancing its peaceful nuclear program despite pressure from the United States.
According to Kanaani, "If it was up to the United States, they would have wanted to dismantle all the industrial nuts and bolts of Iran's nuclear industry, but Iran continues to advance its peaceful nuclear program."
Moreover, Kanaani mentioned that discussions with the US are being conducted through intermediaries and are focused on the framework of lifting economic sanctions.
"Iran has repeatedly stated that it is committed to a political approach and negotiations in order to achieve the removal of the unjust sanctions," he said.
