The second phase of municipal and mayoral elections in Lebanon began on Sunday in the northern governorates of North Lebanon and Akkar, following the end of the first phase on May 4 in Mount Lebanon Governorate.
Preparations for the day, political, logistical, administrative, and security-related, were completed, with the Lebanese Ministry of Interior affirming its continued monitoring of the electoral process.
Towns and cities from Tripoli to Dinnieh, Batroun, Bsharri, Zgharta, Koura, and Akkar are witnessing fierce competition, while dozens of municipalities have secured uncontested wins.
Aoun: Municipal elections are developmental, not political
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visited the Internal Security Forces operations room on Sunday morning to oversee the launch of the second phase of municipal and mayoral elections.
Aoun stated that the elections serve as a message to both the domestic and international communities that "the Lebanese state has been placed back on the right track."
He emphasized that the municipal elections are "developmental, not political," urging citizens in the North and Akkar to participate and vote based on their convictions and the developmental vision that best represents them.
“I urge citizens to vote for the [electoral] program, not the individuals," the Lebanese president indicated.
"I hope for a high voter turnout and ask journalists to support security agencies in curbing electoral bribery,” he added.
Aoun also expressed hope that voter turnout would exceed that of the first phase in Mount Lebanon, which reached 44.59%, according to the Ministry of Interior.
