Macron in Iraq for the Baghdad Conference
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, is in Iraq for the Baghdad conference, where he will be attending with regional leaders, including officials from Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Mustafa Al-Khadimi, the Prime Minister of Iraq, welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday evening at Baghdad International Airport.
The Prime Minister's media office confirmed that a number of Presidents and Kings will participate along with Macron. The conference is being held today, Saturday, and along with international organizations, includes the Egyptian President, the Jordanian King, the Emir of Qatar, and the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Macron will be the only leader attending from outside of the region, where he will meet with Iraqi leaders, in addition to his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Macron, who briefly visited Iraq in September 2020, intends to show his support for "Iraq's central role in fighting terrorism, develop the nation, and help to alleviate tentions," according to the French Presidency.
An adviser to the President stated at an earlier time that France, like the Sahel region, is concerned about the re-emergence of ISIS for their national security.
Macron is scheduled to discuss regional concerns such as the situation in Afghanistan and the fate of French combatants held in Iraq during his bilateral discussions.
