More than 50% of Republicans now support Trump for elections: Poll
Trump was picked from a list of 15 announced and potential candidates for the 2024 nomination.
Former US President Donald Trump is extending his lead in the GOP primary campaign while incumbent President Joe Biden continues to face doubt from Democratic primary voters, as per the latest Fox News national survey.
A list of 15 announced and possible candidates for the GOP nomination in 2024 was read to Republican primary voters. According to the poll, which was issued on Wednesday, Trump has a 30-point advantage over Ron DeSantis and has doubled his margin since February (54%-24%). He increased by 15 last month (43%-28%).
Third place goes to Mike Pence with 6%, followed by Liz Cheney and Nikki Haley with 3% each, and Greg Abbott with 2%. Just 3% are uncertain, and none of the others earn more than 1% support.
With the exception of white men with a college degree, where DeSantis is up by 12 points, Trump gained support from nearly every important group.
The poll also showed that Trump is supported by 60% of the subgroup of voters who supported him in the 2020 general election, while DeSantis is supported by 25% of them and Pence is supported by 5% in the GOP primary.
DeSantis would receive support from Trump primary voters when asked about their second choice, and Trump would receive support from Florida governor primary voters under the title of returning the favor.
It is worth noting that Trump is facing a lawsuit for alleged violations of federal campaign financing laws.
On the other side of the political spectrum, 52% of Democratic primary voters, roughly equal to last month's (53%), would prefer to see someone other than Biden as their party's presidential nominee. Biden is now supported by 44% of voters, up from 37% in February.
Still, Biden’s current support does not compare to what Trump received in February 2019 when 72% of GOP registered voters wanted to keep him as their nominee, or support for former President Obama in 2012 when 81% of Democratic primary voters wanted him to stay.
Although it is anticipated that Biden will run again, he has not yet declared his re-election bid yet.
