Sergey Bogatikov, the general director of Sirius's developer Kronshtadt, informed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu that the new Russian strike unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Sirius will make its maiden flight in May this year.
On Thursday, Shoigu visited Kronshtadt's first specialist plant in Dubna for the construction of large-sized UAVs
Bogatikov told the defense minister that the production of design documentation has been completed, adding that at this moment, flight models are being manufactured. "We are making the first flight in May this year," Bogatikov asserted, adding that they are finishing flight tests at the end of this year.
He also stated that the new systems would be totally manufactured at the new facility.
According to Sergei Surovikin, head of the Russian Aerospace Forces, serial deliveries of new Russian strike drones Sirius will begin in 2023.
Sirius is a follow-up to the Orion drone series, with two engines and heavier take-off weight.
During Shoigu's visit to the company, Russian Aerospace Forces Commander Sergei Surovikin demonstrated the prospective workspace of drone operators, which allows for simultaneous operation of 16 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The same equipment will be deployed on airborne versions of strike drone control centers, according to the commander.
