Prince Charles took bags of cash from controversial Qatari Sheikh
The office of Prince Charles has denied any wrongdoing in the heir to the British throne accepting bags of cash as charity donations from a Qatari politician.
The Sunday Times reported that Prince Charles accepted bags of cash totaling more than $3 million from a former Qatari prime minister, the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the heir to the British throne's charitable foundation.
Between 2011 and 2015, billionaire Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani gave the prince three cash donations stuffed into shopping bags from a luxury department store, as well as a holdall and a suitcase, according to the newspaper.
Prince Charles' office did not deny the allegations, although it argued in a statement that the cash was "passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities, who carried out the appropriate governance and assured us that all the correct processes were followed."
The report focuses on the prince's charitable activities. The Metropolitan Police are investigating one of his foundations on suspicion of promising knighthood and UK citizenship to another wealthy Gulf Arab donor, Saudi businessman Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz.
In February, the Metropolitan Police in London launched an investigation into claims that a Saudi billionaire has been offered a UK citizenship and knighthood in exchange for donations to the Prince Charles' foundation.
This comes just one day after Prince Charles' brother, Prince Andrew has reached a settlement with Epstein scandal victim Virginia Giuffre for sexually assaulting her when she was 17.
The Met will be quizzing Charles as a witness in a cash-for-honors investigation launched by Scotland Yard, according to the Mirror. According to a close source, Charles will be willing to respond to the Met over the case.
"There has been no request for help from the police so far, but if he is asked to help, he will of course do so", the source stated.
