Russian President Vladimir Putin and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro held a phone call in which they confirmed their adherence to closer coordination in terms of international affairs, the Kremlin said Thursday.

The two leaders discussed various issues of cooperation between Moscow and Caracas, which included the implementation of joint projects in trade, economics, energy, and other spheres.

They also underlined the importance of jointly fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, through Moscow supplying Venezuela with vaccines.

"The intention for further close coordination in international affairs was confirmed in accordance with the principles of strategic partnership on which relations between the two states are built," Kremlin said in a statement.

"Vladimir Putin expressed his unwavering support for the efforts of the Venezuelan authorities to strengthen sovereignty and ensure the social and economic development of the country," it added, underlining cooperation between the two nations.

The parties also agreed to intensify Russian-Venezuelan contacts at various levels.

Moscow and Caracas had previously agreed to cooperate on energy and space after the Venezuelan Vice President for Economy visited Russia. The two nations also agreed to cooperate on transport and medicine.

A few months before reaching that agreement, the Kremlin agreed to strengthen Venezuela's defensive and military capabilities, stressing that Caracas' army had already been supplied with Russian systems and equipment.
