US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reiterated President Donald Trump’s commitment to resolving the Ukraine conflict during a conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, the State Department announced on Saturday.
In a statement, the department noted that Rubio spoke with Sybiha on Friday, emphasizing Trump’s dedication to ending the conflict, including through proactive measures at the United Nations Security Council. The call was part of ongoing high-level engagements between US and Ukrainian officials aimed at achieving lasting peace.
The United States on Friday proposed a United Nations resolution on the Ukraine conflict that omits any reference to Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia, AFP reported, citing diplomatic sources.
Rubio urged UN member states to support what he described as a "simple, historic" resolution.
Washington’s proposal comes amid escalating disputes between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, with the US president asserting that his Ukrainian counterpart's involvement in peace negotiations is “not important”.
The US draft also appears to rival a separate resolution put forward by Ukraine and its European allies, which emphasizes the urgency of diplomatic efforts to end the war this year, reiterates Russia’s responsibility for the war, and reaffirms Ukraine’s "territorial integrity". It also echoes previous UN General Assembly resolutions demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Russian and US delegations, led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, held significant discussions in Riyadh, addressing bilateral relations, the Ukraine crisis, and other key issues. Following the talks, Lavrov revealed that both sides had agreed to establish high-level working groups to expedite efforts toward a swift resolution of the conflict in Ukraine.
