Russia, Iran discuss JCPOA, Ukraine
As part of Russian-Iranian cooperation, Tehran and Moscow discuss bilateral cooperation, as well as their views on several issues regarding Ukraine and the Vienna talks.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian discussed the situation around the Iran nuclear deal, the ongoing talks about it in Vienna, and the Western attempts to escalate in Ukraine.
"A thorough exchange of views took place on key international issues, including the unhealthy situation fueled by the West around Ukraine," the Russian foreign ministry said.
Lavrov underlined that the Western propaganda campaign spearheaded by the United States and its allies regarding so-called Russian aggression against Ukraine "pursued provocative goals," the ministry added.
The West aims to encourage the Ukrainian authorities to pernicious attempts to use force against Donbas, the foreign ministry's statement following the call read.
The ministry also noted that the two top diplomats discussed the situation around the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program in the context of ongoing negotiations in Vienna to restore the full implementation of the accord.
Russia and Iran have the same goal from the talks, which is the implementation of the initially balanced UN Security Council-approved configuration.
The nuclear talks in the Austrian capital are aimed at reviving the nuclear deal, which was abandoned by all parties after the United States withdrew under Trump in 2018 and imposed harsh sanctions on Iran.
Iranian national security chief Ali Shamkhani had a phone call with Tehran's chief delegate to Vienna, he announced on Twitter, saying the West's play was still ongoing in a bid for it to evade commitment.
Shamkhani said Bagheri Kani confirmed two statements he had in mind about the nuclear talks in the Austrian capital aimed at reviving the nuclear deal.
According to Bagheri Kani, it is getting more difficult for the Iranian negotiators to advance Tehran's logical and legal instructions.
Iran and Russia had previously met on the presidential level to discuss bilateral cooperation and several common issues.
