Russian Navy to conduct anti-aircraft, anti-submarine defense drills
Russia's Baltic Fleet has announced that twenty ships of various missions are participating in the large-scale naval drills in the Baltic Sea.
Russian news agency TASS quoted Monday Russia's Baltic Fleet press office as saying that the Fleet's task forces, consisting of Project 20380 corvettes Stoiky and Soobrazitelny, departed from the Baltiysk naval base for long-distance deployment.
In a statement, the Fleet's press office indicated that the corvettes will conduct anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defense drills.
Twenty ships of various missions are participating in the large-scale naval drills in the Baltic Sea.
In addition, Ka-52 naval helicopters will search for hypothetical enemy submarines, discover surface targets, and perform rescue operations.
"Pursuant to the main goals of their deployment, the warships will participate in naval drills under the general command of Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov, ensure naval presence and demonstrate the St. Andrew’s [Russian naval] flag in various parts of the World Ocean," the statement read.
According to TASS, Stoiky and Soobrazitelny corvettes "are designed to accomplish green-water missions, fight enemy surface ships and submarines and provide artillery support for amphibious assault operations."
Russian drills in parallel with rising tensions
It is noteworthy that on January 22, Russia carried out exercises to repel an attack by a hypothetical enemy sabotage group on a sensitive facility of the military corps of the Baltic Fleet.
The Military Corps of the Baltic Fleet issued a statement saying, "According to the scenario of the exercise, the hypothetical enemy attempted to enter the facility to seize it. The soldiers of the duty unit conducted reconnaissance and isolated the hypothetical enemy sabotage group until the arrival of additional reinforcements."
These exercises are part of a series of military exercises carried out by various Russian Armed Forces units in different military regions, especially in the west of the country, in parallel with the continuing tension in relations between Russia and NATO, mainly on the borders with Ukraine and Belarus.
