The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday that the DPRK's second attempt to launch a reconnaissance satellite has failed.
According to the agency, the country plans to make a third attempt in October this year.
North Korea reportedly started a "space launch vehicle" on Wednesday, according to a previous report by Yonhap, which cited the South Korean military.
In reaction to the failed launch, a US State Department spokesperson told Sputnik on Wednesday that the DPRK's actions violated the UN Security Council resolutions.
"Space launch vehicles (SLVs) incorporate technologies that are identical to, and interchangeable with, those used in ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs)," the spokesperson said on Wednesday.
"Any DPRK [North Korea] launch that uses ballistic missile technology, which would include SLVs used to launch a satellite into space, violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions," the spokesman added, noting that the US continues to seek dialogue with Pyongyang without preconditions and presses on it to engage in serious diplomacy.
He further said that the US calls on the DPRK to refrain from further "threatening behavior."

The US and South Korea have been conducting joint military exercises in the Peninsula for decades, but in recent years they have increased the scale and intensity of their drills, simulating large-scale bombing against the DPRK.
Pyongyang has condemned the allies' combined exercises as invasion rehearsals and has warned multiple times it would take "overwhelming" action in response.
On July 11, the DPRK accused the US of repeatedly violating its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) with a military spy plane.
The deputy head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim Yo Jong, stated that the US plane entered DPRK's EEZ eight times in a single day.
