Two people were injured in a shooting Friday night on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus, outside the 3M Arena at Mariucci, following a graduation ceremony for Wayzata High School, officials confirmed.
A suspect is in custody, the police said.
University of Minnesota Interim Police Chief Erik Swanson said the shooting took place around 8:20 pm, according to CBS News. The two victims were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, though the severity of their injuries remains unknown.
Suspect identity hidden
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, is currently in custody as the motive and details surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.
Campus police are leading the investigation, supported by the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz reacted on social media, calling it "horrific news" that a moment of celebration turned into one of "fear and sadness," adding that his office is working with the university and offering state support as needed.

Wider context
Gun violence remains a persistent and troubling issue in the United States. While polls consistently show that many Americans support stricter gun laws, meaningful reform is often hindered by the powerful influence of pro-gun lobbying groups, constitutional protections under the Second Amendment, and a deeply rooted gun culture.
Recent incidents underscore the ongoing crisis. On January 22, a shooting at Antioch High School in Tennessee resulted in the deaths of a student and the shooter, with another student injured. In February, a gunman opened fire at UPMC Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania, killing a police officer and injuring several others before being fatally shot.
In March, a shooting at a car show in Las Cruces, New Mexico, left three teenagers dead and 15 injured. The following month, a Florida State University student was indicted for a campus shooting that killed two people and wounded six more.
Despite these tragic and frequent mass shootings, gun regulations in the US remain relatively lax.
