Sinn Fein to present anti-Israeli settlements bill to Irish Parliament
The Sinn Fein chairperson announces the launch of a campaign to build alliances with Irish parties and civil society organizations to support Palestinian rights.
The chairperson of the Irish Sinn Fein party, Declan Kearney, announced that the party has prepared a bill that will be presented to Parliament to withdraw the Irish government's investments from nine international companies whose name was included in the blacklist issued by the United Nations in 2020 for companies that invest in illegal Israeli occupation settlements.
In 2020, the United Nations issued a blacklist of 112 companies that carry out commercial activities in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, the Eastern part of Al-Quds, and the Golan Heights, in violation of international law.
The list includes 94 Israeli companies and 18 companies from six other countries, operating directly, through agents, or through back channels.
Kearney's announcement came on Thursday during a meeting held by the Anti-Apartheid Committee of the Palestinian National Council with the leadership of the Sinn Fein party and members of parliament from the party, in the presence of the chairperson of the National Council, Fahmy Al-Zaarir, as per Palestinian news agency WAFA.
The Sinn Fein chairperson also announced the launch of a campaign to build alliances with Irish parties and civil society organizations to support Palestinian rights.
On his part, Irish MP John Brady said the bill would require the Irish government property agency to withdraw its investments from the nine companies on the UN blacklist.
He confirmed that the bill was submitted to the Legislative Office of the Irish Parliament as a priority piece of legislation and will be submitted for a vote and discussion with the government.
On his part, Al-Zaarir thanked the Sinn Fein party for the historical role it plays in supporting Palestinian national rights.
He briefed the Sinn Fein leadership and members of parliament on the daily crimes committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinian people.
It is noteworthy that the Sinn Fein party has long voiced its support for the Palestinian cause and condemned the Israeli occupation crimes against Palestinians, such as forcible expulsion, illegal settlement expansion, and aggression on the Gaza Strip.
