Sudanese Professionals Association Calls for Million-Strong Demonstration
The Sudanese Professionals Association is organizing a million-strong demonstration to reject the recent political agreement, demanding an overthrow of the military coup.
Mass protests will be held in Sudan this afternoon, at the invitation of the Sudanese Professionals Association, the Communist Party, and the Resistance Committees, to reject the new political agreement and demand full civilian rule.
A statement by the Professionals Association posted on its Twitter account called for the crowds to gather for the million processions on Tuesday, noting that it is "the normal response to the nonsense perpetrated by the military council alliance and (PM Abdallah) Hamdok,” noting that protestors will call for the overthrow of the putschists and the seizure of power.
On Monday night, protesters roamed the streets of a number of districts of the capital, Khartoum, calling for a civilian state.
This comes a week after Abdallah Hamdok was reinstated as Sudan’s Prime Minister following an agreement reached with the Sudanese army chief, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, regarding his return to the position and the release of civilian leaders detained since last month's coup.
According to the United Nations envoy to Sudan, Volker Perthes, the agreement concluded in Sudan to reinstate Prime Minister Hamdok "is incomplete", but nonetheless saved the country from a civil war.
Following the execution of the coup by al-Burhan, clashes erupted between the police and protesters, leading to dozens of casualties which included children.
