Iranian sources reported on Sunday that a delegation of high-ranking Omani officials led by the country's Sultan Haitham bin Tarik met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other senior officials in Tehran on Sunday.

The visit comes in light of recent news that Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi was freed in a prisoner exchange operation that was mediated by Oman.

During today's meeting, President Ebrahim Raisi called for Iranian-Omani relations to be bolstered in several areas on mutual interests, including industry, defense, and security affairs, the Presidency said in a statement published online.

"Tehran and Muscat have common views on regional cooperation, strengthening and stabilizing the security, peace, and prosperity of the nations of the region," it quoted Raisi as saying.

On Oman's part, the country's official news agency wrote in a tweet that memorandums of understanding and agreements on promoting investments were concluded.

Oman entertains close diplomatic ties with Iran and assumed an important mediating role between Tehran and Washington in the JCPOA deal when it was concluded in 2015.

It was thanks to these efforts that Iran managed to be relieved of inhumane US sanctions.

The JCPOA was dropped in 2018 after the US abruptly withdrew from it and reintroduced sanctions.

Since the JCPOA collapsed, efforts on the part of Iran and Oman have been mobilized in order to revive the deal.
