US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations currently underway in Sharm el-Sheikh are "very close" to concluding, signaling a potential visit to the region in the coming days, particularly mentioning traveling to Egypt.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, "Talks with Hamas are going well, and I might go to the Middle East next Sunday. All Islamic and Arab countries are involved in the process, something that has never happened before."
This comes as mediated talks for a potential ceasefire in Gaza continue after two years of genocide and starvation, with delegations representing the Palestinian Resistance, Arab states, and international mediators.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Trump would be interested in visiting the Middle East to attend the signing ceremony for a Gaza peace agreement, if such a deal is achieved, in a statement on Wednesday.
"Potentially, the president [Trump] will have to make that decision, but I anticipate that he would be interested in doing so if the timing could work out," Rubio told The Washington Examiner if a ceasefire agreement is reached in Gaza.
Hamas on ceasefire talks
The talks are centered around a 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, which includes provisions for a ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli captives.
Taher al-Nounou, advisor to Hamas’ Political Bureau chief, described the movement’s approach in the talks as “positive and responsible,” aimed at achieving tangible progress and completing the agreement.
Al-Nounou confirmed that both sides have exchanged lists of prisoners and captives in accordance with previously agreed criteria. He also emphasized that mediators are working to remove obstacles to the implementation of a ceasefire, noting a growing sense of optimism among participants.
“Hamas is prepared to immediately discuss the details of the prisoner swap through the mediators,” al-Nounou said, highlighting the movement’s commitment to a comprehensive and orderly resolution.
