Any modifications to the US-drafted Ukraine peace plan will be made solely by US President Donald Trump, according to Politico, citing a senior US official.
"It was strongly implied to the Ukrainians that the United States expects them to agree to a peace deal," the official said. “Any changes will be decided upon by the president himself.”
US generals may visit Moscow to discuss new Ukraine peace plan
A group of senior US military officials, led by Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, may travel to Moscow next week to negotiate a proposed Ukraine peace plan, according to a report by The Guardian.
On Thursday, Driscoll presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with a draft version of the peace plan developed by the United States. According to the Ukrainian president’s office, Zelensky and the US delegation agreed to collaborate on refining the plan’s points.
Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed US President Donald Trump's 28-point peace proposal for Ukraine, suggesting that it offers a potential foundation for resolving the conflict, if Kiev and its Western allies are willing to engage in serious dialogue.
Speaking during a meeting with the permanent members of Russia’s Security Council, Putin said the plan, which outlines key conditions for peace, could serve as a "basis for a final peaceful settlement."
The plan includes a reduction in US military aid, granting Russian language state status in Ukraine, recognizing the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, limiting Ukraine's armed forces, and prohibiting foreign troops and long-range weapons on Ukrainian territory.
Planned visit to Moscow for direct talks
Citing US sources, The Guardian reported that Driscoll and a team of American generals are expected to travel to Moscow at the end of next week. The delegation would discuss the proposed Ukraine peace plan directly with the Kremlin.
The proposed agreement would initially last 10 years and would require signatures from Ukraine, the United States, the European Union, NATO, and Russia.
Putin stated on Friday that the current 28-point plan is a modernized version of an earlier proposal discussed with President Trump during their meeting in Anchorage, Alaska.
According to Putin, Moscow agreed to make certain compromises, but Kiev rejected the plan following the summit. He emphasised that the latest version builds on the original Trump-era draft.
