US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order instructing a formal review of the Muslim Brotherhood to assess whether certain branches—specifically in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan—should be designated as terrorist organizations, the White House announced Monday.
The order directs the Secretaries of State and Treasury to evaluate whether specific chapters of the group meet the criteria for designation as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
According to the statement, the secretaries are required to submit their findings and recommendations, after which action must be taken within 45 days.
In July, the Trump administration officially revoked the foreign terrorist organization designation for al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to a memo from the State Department in a broader effort to ease sanctions on Syria.
