US President Donald Trump expressed dismay over Elon Musk's political ambitions, saying he watched with sadness as his former ally went "off the rails" by pursuing plans to form a new political party.
"I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, even though they have never succeeded in the United States. The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Trump argued that the political landscape already has too many left-wing Democrats who, in his view, have "lost their confidence" and rational judgment. He also targeted Jared Isaacman, a longtime associate of Musk and former candidate for NASA administrator, calling him a "blue-blooded Democrat" because of his history of never donating to Republican campaigns.
Trump criticized the close ties between Musk's SpaceX and NASA, writing, "I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life." He pointed to SpaceX's role as a major government contractor for US space missions as evidence of potential conflicts.
Trump and Musk fallout over spending bill
Musk launched a new political organization called the "America Party," a move that comes amid his deteriorating relationship with Trump, who has publicly dismissed the effort as a misguided venture that departs from their former alliance.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it. When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom," Musk announced in a tweet on July 5.
This follows the fallout between Trump and his former close ally Musk, due to disagreements on the "Big Beautiful Bill", which will add over 3 trillion dollars to the United States' deficit.
Trump signed the spending bill into law on July 4th, gloating over it stating "It’s the most popular bill ever signed in the history of the country," while emphasizing the unprecedented nature of the legislation by adding that, "What we’ve done is put everything into one bill, we’ve never had anything like that before."
