Ukraine's electricity imports from EU hit record high in June 2024
Hungary supplied 42% of the EU's exports to Ukraine, totaling 357,100 megawatt-hours.
In June, Ukraine received 858,400 megawatt-hours of electricity imports from the European Union, marking a 6% increase compared to the total imports for the entire year of 2023, according to Ukrainian analytical center DiXi Group's announcement on Wednesday.
"In June 2024, Ukraine imported 858,400 megawatts per hour of electricity. This is 6% more than was acquired during the whole of 2023 — 806,400 megawatts per hour. Moreover, this is the highest value recorded in the past 10 years (official data up to 2014 is not publicly available)," the statement read.
Hungary supplied 42% of the EU's exports to Ukraine, totaling 357,100 megawatt-hours. Slovakia and Romania each exported 297,000 megawatt-hours, while Poland followed with 138,100 megawatt-hours, and Moldova with 66,200 megawatt-hours.
In April, Ukrainian power grid operator Ukrenergo cautioned that the country would persist in experiencing power shortages. The company cited infrastructure damage as the reason for operating the grid at maximum capacity.

Russia's offensive comes in the context of heightened escalations in Russia's border regions. It also comes at a critical time for Ukraine's army as it is facing a shortage of ammunition and manpower.
In late March, Ukrenergo announced that it had implemented emergency blackouts in three different regions after Moscow carried out an overnight operation targeting multiple power stations.
The company said it was "forced to apply emergency blackout schedules in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhye, and Kirovograd until the evening".
Restrictions had already been imposed in the major cities of Kharkiv and Kryvyi Rih following a Russian strike.
"Consumers in other regions are asked to use electricity sparingly and consciously," Ukrenergo warned.
