The UN General Assembly unanimously approved, on Sunday, the Pact for the Future, along with its annexes: the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations.

This comprehensive pact aims to enhance global governance and address major challenges facing humanity, including sustainable development, international peace, technological innovation, and the rights of youth and future generations. It also includes specific action plans to tackle these issues.

General Assembly President Philemon Yang praised the adoption as a "pledge to address immediate crises" and a means to "lay the foundations for a sustainable, just, and peaceful global order."

The Global Digital Compact sets forth principles for an open, human-centered digital future, while the Declaration on Future Generations emphasizes the importance of considering the rights of future generations in decision-making.

Yang highlighted the necessity of solidarity and multilateral cooperation to implement the pact's commitments and described the upcoming Summit of the Future as a "call to action" aimed at creating a future that safeguards both humanity and the planet.

UN Secretary-General Calls for 21st-century solutions at Summit of the Future

In his speech, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the need for the Summit of the Future, stating that "21st-century challenges require 21st-century solutions" and that "we need tough decisions to get back on track."

Acknowledging the current period of turbulence and transition, Guterres remarked, "We cannot wait for perfect conditions."

He urged that "we must take the first decisive steps towards updating and reforming international cooperation to make it more networked, fair and inclusive now, and today, thanks to your efforts, we have."
