Venezuela is conducting an electoral simulation that ends today, Sunday.
On Sunday, the Venezuelan National Electoral Council (CNE) rejected the statements of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, about the elections in the country.
The statement issued by the National Electoral Council denounced Borrell's comments stressing that "these statements contradict what was agreed upon between the Electoral College and the delegation of the European Organization, which is to maintain impartiality and objectivity and not to interfere in the electoral process."
The Council also called on the European Union delegation in Venezuela to explain this public violation of the agreement, which it considered a clear interference in the country's internal affairs.
Borrell: Electoral legitimacy stems from the EU Observer Mission
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, considered that the report of the European Observer Mission will have the final say in whether to give legitimacy to the government of Nicolas Maduro or not. According to Borrell, this will also be the deciding element in legitimizing the elections, in which an important sector of the opposition decided to participate.
“If the entire opposition appears in the elections, including the parties of Mr. Guaido, well we have to accompany them because it gives them greater guarantees that we are present auditing the system,” Borrell said.
These statements angered Caracas.
The Venezuelan government stressed that it will not accept any interference in the electoral process scheduled for next November, asserting that these elections do not depend on their legitimacy and legality on any foreign party, but rather strictly on popular sovereignty.
An electoral simulation is due today
Venezuela is conducting an electoral simulation that ends today, Sunday. This simulation is happening a month before regional and municipal elections on November 21.
In preparation for the electoral simulation process, the National Electoral Council has prepared 446 polling sites along with 1,386 polling booths. The polls will open for Venezuelans to cast their votes from 7:00 am (Caracas time) until 4:00 pm.
