On Sunday, Australia said it will not be sending its athletes to the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The event, which is on the scale of the Olympics, is less than 200 km from Shanghai, and is scheduled for September 10 to 25.

About 300 athletes and 150 support staff from the Oceania region were invited to take place in the event, which will exhibit many sports.

A spokesman for the Australian Olympic Committee, in a message to AFP, said: "No athletes from Australian sports" will take part in the event.

Shanghai is battling a Covid-19 outbreak. Within this context, Hangzhou organizers said they are developing a Covid-19 control plan based on the Beijing Winter Olympics in February. However, no detail was given out regarding how China will be holding the games if China's strict zero-COVID-19 policy doesn't change.
