Benzema brings Real Madrid's UEFA Super Cup home
French player Karim Benzema takes his team once again through a new victory, this time winning the UEFA Super Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt in Helsinki.
The Spanish team of Real Madrid took home the UEFA Super Cup at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium, after beating German rival Eintracht Frankfurt.
French forward Karim Benzema became the club’s second-highest all-time scorer as he brought the team to victory in the 65th minute, after combining his skills with Brazilian teammate Vinicius Junior to score the winning goal.
Eintracht Frankfurt, however, put up a good game after they came into the match following a 6-1 Bundesliga win over Bayern Munich during the weekend.
The goal ranked Benzema ahead of Spanish great Raul in Real’s all-time list with 324 strikes.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo maintains the top spot, with the Portuguese striker racking up 450 goals during his nine years at the Bernabeu – the home stadium of Real Madrid.
Ancelotti: Benzema’s going for the Ballon d’Or
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Benzema as a team leader, adding: “If we’re here it’s largely due to his merits, he scored a lot of goals, he finished the season well, he scored a goal today and now he’s going for the Ballon d’Or award”.
The new summer additions to the club, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Antonio Rudiger, were among those introduced from the bench for their formal debuts.
