Jenni Hermoso files lawsuit against Rubiales for sexual assault
Hermoso claims she did not consent to being kissed by Rubiales after Spain's World Cup final victory, and has moved to sue him.
Jenni Hermoso has filed a court lawsuit against Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales over a kiss she claims was nonconsensual during Spain's World Cup victory. The 46-year-old Rubiales may face criminal penalties if found guilty.
Rubiales maintains the kiss was "mutual and "consensual," but Fifa temporarily suspended the president.
Hermoso had previously explained that she was urged to issue a statement following the incident in order to "alleviate the pressure" on Rubiales, saying she had been "under continuous pressure to make a statement that could justify Mr. Luis Rubiales’ actions."
According to Spain's top criminal court, the statements made by Hermoso indicate the act was not consensual.
Additionally, legal experts were expected to contact her to let her know she has the option of legal action. Hermoso allegedly filed her complaint on Tuesday.
Rubiales has refused to resign for his actions, and his mother has announced going on a hunger strike due to the "inhuman hunt" against her son in light of the criticism following his kiss.
On Friday, Spain's national sports tribunal (TAD) opened a misconduct case against Rubiales, citing he had committed a "serious offense," ignoring the government's request to classify his offense as "very serious," which would have had him suspended.
81 Spanish players, including all 23 World Cup winners, have stated that they would not play for Spain again under Rubiales' leadership.
They are scheduled to participate in the UEFA Nations League against Sweden and Switzerland on September 22 and 26.
