  • Russia: Western Accusations on Iran's Missile Program Mere Speculations
Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vassily Alekseevich Nebenzia, confirmed yesterday, Wednesday, that the US is still applying its maximum pressure policy on Iran, thus violating the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which regulated the development of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

"Unfortunately, we have not yet seen a real review of the decisions of the former US administration," Nebenzia said at a Security Council meeting.

He added: "Technically, the US side is still applying its policy of maximum pressure on Iran, including maintaining the effects of unilateral restrictions and the arms embargo imposed on Iran, despite the fact that all UN restrictions in this regard are no longer effective."

He also stressed that the Western accusations on Iran's ballistic missile program are groundless. He said, "These are nothing but mere speculations. They have not yet provided a singular specific fact, and the Secretary-General confirmed this."

The Russian Representative stated that the United States should immediately return to implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program, calling for "dedicating every effort to restore the plan."

Earlier, the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, had urged the administration of US President Joe Biden to lift or waive all sanctions imposed on Iran and extend the exemptions related to the oil trade with Iran.

The Security Council will discuss the Secretary-General's biannual report on the implementation of the 2015 resolution that guarantees the nuclear deal between Iran, the United States, France, Britain, Germany, Russia, and China.
