The United Nations Mission to Libya called on the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum to "honor their pledges" and live up to the overwhelming demand of the Libyan people to hold the elections on December 24 "as stipulated in the Roadmap."
The UN Mission said, "With regards to statements circulated by social media accounts accusing United Nations Support Mission to Libya of allowing the discussion of proposals that fall outside of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum Roadmap or aim at changing the Roadmap," the Mission reiterated that its role is to unify the Libyan people and facilitate or even mediate their discussions, "provided that the parties are ready for mediation or working for a compromise."
The Mission continued by saying the members of the LPDF (Libyan Political Dialogue Forum), who authored the ‘Roadmap,’ are the ones that often propose ideas and solutions contradicting with the said roadmap, some of those ideas and solutions "put to question some of its basic premises with the argument that they don't correspond to the current realities."
The UNSMIL statement reminded the LPDF, its members, and other ‘relevant' institutions to "action their ambition," which they expressed in the roadmap to work for elections being held on December 24.
On the other hand, the statement criticized the said forum, its members, and the above-mentioned institutions by saying they often "follow their partisan and particular interest." UNSMIL said their actions represent the Libyan society's divides, accusing them of not working for compromises that fall in line with the roadmap.
"UNSMIL has continuously called on LPDF members as well as other relevant institutions to honor their pledges and live up to the overwhelming demand of the Libyan people to hold the elections on December 24, as stipulated in the roadmap," added the statement.
Aguila Saleh, the Speaker for the Libyan House of Representatives, had previously said the United Nations Support Mission to Libya is ‘unclear, as usual,’ accusing it of not having any control due to not having any knowledge over the Libyan people's characteristics, traditions, and praxes.
Salih said the Mission could not provide anything without support from the Libyan people, asserting that it is a support mission in Libya that has no authority to issue instructions and decisions as if it were the head of state.
Moreover, the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum submitted three proposals for its 75 members to vote on. The said proposals related to simultaneously holding parliamentary and presidential elections on December 24.
