Algeria pledges $100M to Palestinians
Upon the Palestinian president's visit to Algeria, the Algerian president pledged $100 million in aid to the Palestinians during a press conference.
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas visited Algiers on Monday and met with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who committed $100 million in aid to the Palestinians.
Tebboune said at a joint press conference that the funding was "in keeping with Algeria's revolutionary history and the entire Algerian people's commitment to supporting the just Palestinian cause under all circumstances."
Algeria will host an Arab League summit in March 2022, the first since Morocco reestablished diplomatic ties with "Israel" following a series of US-brokered peace agreements.
Tebboune said Monday that Algeria plans "to put the Palestinian cause at the center of this important event".
According to Algerian television, he also hopes to host Palestinian factions for negotiations.
The Palestinian leader's trip to North Africa, which includes a stop in Tunisia, comes just two weeks after Israeli Security Minister Benny Gantz signed a security agreement with Morocco.
Algeria, which sees Israeli security cooperation with the kingdom as a threat to its national security, was enraged by the transaction.
A top Algerian official said Gantz's visit "targeted" his country.
In August, Algiers severed diplomatic ties with Rabat, citing Morocco's "hostile" acts, which the kingdom disputes.
