Atmosphere created by US admin around Trump provoked situation: Moscow
According to Dmitry Peskov, the attitude fostered by the present US government surrounding Trump "provoked what the United States is facing today."
Moscow does not believe that the attempted assassination of former US President and presidential candidate Donald Trump was orchestrated by US authorities, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday.
Peskov told a news conference that Russia "does not think that the elimination attempt and assassination attempt on Trump was organized by the incumbent authorities."
Nonetheless, the attitude fostered by the present US government surrounding Trump "provoked what the United States is facing today," the speaker remarked.
Peskov told journalists that after attempting to remove Trump from politics "first using legal tools, courts, prosecutors, attempts to politically discredit and compromise the candidate — it was obvious to all outside observers that his life was in danger."
The spokesman said the US presidential election was a domestic matter, and it was not up to Moscow to determine whether the assassination attempt would jeopardize the election's validity, emphasizing that Russia has always opposed any violence in political struggle.
"Russia has always condemned and we are strongly condemning any manifestation of violence in the course of political struggle," he stated.
The US political system has generated episodes of violence in political power play on numerous occasions throughout history, Peskov added.
"We know of multiple cases of US presidents being wounded and even assassinated," he remarked.
Some Republican officials are blaming incumbent President Joe Biden for the assassination attempt that targeted presidential candidate Donald Trump earlier during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Senator JD Vance of Ohio took to X to directly slam Biden and his campaign, accusing them of triggering the shooting.
According to Vance, "The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs," which represents a narrative that prompted the assassination attempt earlier today.

Moments after the shooting, security was able to approach Trump's podium to evacuate him. Trump appeared to have sustained mild wounds, as blood was seen running from the side of his head.
"In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win," he wrote on his social media network Truth.
Trump thanked everyone for their backing, saying he loved the country and was excited to talk to them at a future event in Wisconsin.
World leaders condemned the attack on Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where the former president was shot in the ear. They expressed shock, denounced political violence, and extended wishes for his speedy recovery.
The Trump campaign provided an update stating that Trump, currently campaigning for reelection in November's US election, was reported to be "doing well." Meanwhile, the FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged 20 and from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the individual involved in what they described as an attempted assassination.
