CNN on Wednesday announced plans to host a high-stakes election debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on June 27, 2024.
The event will take place in the battleground state of Georgia, starting at 9 p.m. ET.
In a statement released by CNN, the debate is set to unfold in the network's Atlanta studios without an audience to allow for maximum focus on the candidates' discourse. Further details regarding moderators and specific format will be disclosed at a later date.
To participate in the debate, candidates must meet stringent criteria, including constitutional eligibility, filing a statement of candidacy, appearing on a sufficient number of state ballots to secure 270 electoral votes, and obtaining a minimum of 15% support in four national polls adhering to CNN's standards.
Biden has swiftly accepted CNN's invitation and declared his readiness to engage in a debate. Trump likewise confirmed his participation while lambasting Biden as "the worst president in US history" and a threat to democracy.

This year's elections likely mark the most heated the country has ever witnessed, due to considerations from certain states, namely Texas, to split away from the federation.
While Republicans have pointed fingers at Biden for his poor handling of the migrant crisis, Biden has attempted to deflect these criticisms by attributing the lack of progress to Congress's failure to support his proposed reforms.
Trump, on the other hand, maintains his staunch anti-immigration stance, which has long been a cornerstone of his political persona, and he has consistently pledged to tighten measures against border crossings from Mexico in his pursuit of a White House comeback.
Other issues have arisen due to Biden's stance in the war on Gaza which has so far claimed the lives of over 35,000 Palestinians.

New surveys published on Tuesday showed Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in 5 key battleground states.
According to the results, Trump is ahead in Pennsylvania (3 points), Arizona (7), Michigan (7), Georgia (10), and Nevada (12). Biden dominated with 2 points in Wisconsin.
As the survey results spread, Biden's team released a statement by Democratic pollster Geoff Garin where he claimed that "the only consistency in recent public polls is inconsistency."
“These results need to be weighed against the 30-plus polls that show Biden up and gaining – which is exactly why drawing broad conclusions about the race based on results from one poll is a mistake.”
