British Conservative MP David Amess has died following a stabbing at an event in his local constituency in southeast England, British media said Friday.
Local police did not name Amess; however, they said, "A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea," adding that the victim "later died."
"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident," said Essex police, adding that the man in custody was aged 25, and a knife was recovered.
The 69-year-old member of Parliament was targeted at noon during the meeting at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.
According to the deputy chair of the local Conservative club in Sir David's constituency, the MP had been "stabbed three times."
A local employee near the church said she did not know anything about the incident but heard emergency service vehicles go by.
"We just saw all the police and the ambulances turning up, it was probably about half-past 12 or just before then," she told the Press Association.
Emergency services tried their best to save Amess' life, but their attempts were futile.
He was elected to parliament in 1983 to represent Basildon and then stood for election in Southen West in 1997.
The stabbing at a meeting with constituents is not new to the UK, as Labour lawmaker Stephen Timms survived a stabbing in his constituency office in 2010. Labour MP Jo Cox was also fatally shot in 2016, days before the Brexit referendum.
MPs and politicians from all parties have reacted with shock to the news.
