The latest updates from Iran reveal that the death toll following the explosion at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas has risen sharply to 65, according to Hormozgan Province Governor Mohammad Ashouri.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday at the busy southern Iranian port, caused major destruction. Media reports have pointed to the possible mishandling of chemicals as a cause, but officials have not yet confirmed this. Earlier, it was reported that the blast resulted from the detonation of a fuel tanker.
"The death toll in the Shahid Rajaee port incident has risen to 65," Ashouri said, as quoted by the Fars news agency.
In a statement issued Sunday evening, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei addressed the tragedy, offering condolences to the families of the victims and praising those who donated blood to aid the wounded. The Iranian leader urged authorities to launch a full investigation, stressing the need to uncover the cause and determine whether there was "any case of negligence or deliberate actions."
Rescue operations and investigations are ongoing as security and judicial teams continue to examine the site.
