Armed bandits killing or kidnapping people for cash have killed hundreds in Nigeria this year. Moreover, Boko Haram has also been active in the Niger State recently, taking over over a number of communities in the state by giving villagers money so that they would join them in the fight against the government.

This attack followed the killing of at least 20 people in the state when gunmen attacked a market and burned vehicles.
