Iran’s top commander kicks off three-day visit to Iraq
Bagheri is set to meet with various top-level Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani and President Abdul Latif Rashid.
At the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart, the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, touched down in Baghdad on Saturday night, kicking off a three-day visit to Iraq.
Accompanied by several high-ranking military and political figures, Bagheri emphasized Iraq's significance as a crucial neighbor to Iran, highlighting the friendly bond between the two nations.
He is set to meet with various top-level Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani and President Abdul Latif Rashid.
Upon his arrival in Baghdad, Major General Bagheri and his delegation paid tribute to martyr General Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis at the location of the US drone strike that targeted them near Baghdad airport in January 2020.
Bagheri's visit comes as US occupation bases in Iraq and Syria are being subjected to attacks claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq in response to the US support for the Israeli massacres against the Palestinian people in Gaza, amid US accusations pointed at Iran's alleged responsibility for the strikes.
It is noteworthy that Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, vehemently dismissed what he termed as "baseless accusations" by Washington against Tehran during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East and Syria.
Iravani underlined that Iran has never conducted attacks on the US military in Syria or any other location, emphasizing that such claims are unsubstantiated and part of a deliberate effort by the United States to divert attention from the violations of international law and the UN Charter in Syria, as quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA.
