Iran, Saudi Foreign Ministers to agree on meeting details soon
As part of the process of re-establishing diplomatic relations, Abdollahian and Bin Farhan will agree on the time and place of the long-awaited meeting between the two ministers.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, will be set within the next 48 hours.
Speaking to reporters on the Islamic Republic Day on Saturday, Amir-Abdollahian told reporters that the time and place of the meeting with his Saudi counterpart would be decided upon soon via a telephone call.
“We are scheduled to have a (telephone) conversation with the Saudi counterpart within the next 48 hours and finalize (the time and place of the meeting).”
Amir-Abdollahian congratulated the Iranian people on the 44th anniversary of ado the Islamic Republic as the country’s official governing system.
The Minister said, “The secret to the persistence of the Islamic Republic of Iran is the continuation of legitimacy and the strong and high vote of people for the sacred establishment.”
Amir-Abdollahian pointed out to the Iranian people's trust in the Islamic republic, as a key factor that led to the failure of hostile policies employed against Iran in the last 44 years.
The result of the referendum held in 1979 showed that 98.2% of eligible voters are in favor of replacing the Pahlavi dynasty with the Islamic Republic. Iran legitimized the victory of the Islamic revolution through voting booths and ended 2,500 years of monarchic rule in the country.
The meeting happens as part of an ongoing effort to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries. China was able to spark the process of reconciliation between the two nations on March 10. Since then it seems the heads of state in both countries have extended official invitations to one another.
Diplomatic relations took a hit in 2016 when the Saudi government executed Sheikh Baqir Al-Nimr in January 2016.
