Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, met on Saturday with Ali Hassan Khalil, a Lebanese MP and political aide to the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, according to a press statement issued by the SNSC's General Secretariat.
The Secretariat explained that Larijani and Khalil discussed the latest regional developments, particularly “the actions of the Zionist entity in southern Lebanon and its repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement.”
Earlier in the day, Speaker Nabih Berri told a visiting Lebanese labor delegation that the Israeli breaches reflect the occupation’s inherently aggressive nature, asking, “When and where has Israel ever adhered to a single clause of the ceasefire agreement?”
Berri also noted that the Resistance “has not fired a single shot in 11 months” and that Lebanon has fulfilled all its obligations under the ceasefire arrangement south of the Litani River, describing the current crisis facing the country as “the most dangerous yet.”
US provides 'Israel' with political cover for its wars in the region: Khalil
Berri's stance was mirrored in an earlier statement by Khalil who asserted that "Israel" continues its violations despite the ceasefire, while noting that the Resistance has fully adhered to the agreement so far.
In an interview for Al Mayadeen on November 9, MP Khalil stressed that no one can fully predict the direction of the Israeli aggression, saying, "The possibility of a large-scale war cannot be ruled out entirely, as the facts on the ground show a higher level of escalation that requires caution."
He added that "Israel" is acting confidently because the United States continues to provide political cover for its wars against Lebanon and other countries in the region.
Larijani's previous visits to Lebanon
Meanwhile, Larijani has visited Lebanon several times since assuming his post as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, meeting with various political leaders and affirming that Tehran stands by Beirut without interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
In November 2024, Larijani visited Beirut as part of a regional mission, during which he met with the Lebanese Speaker, Nabih Berri, and other senior Lebanese officials. He declared that support for Lebanon is a “fundamental responsibility” of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He also emphasized that “the Lebanese people are exceptional” and reaffirmed Iran’s backing for the Lebanese resistance.
Then, on August 13, 2025, Larijani arrived in Beirut for another official visit. Upon arrival, he stated, “Whenever Lebanon faces any kind of suffering, we feel it in Iran as well, and be assured that we will stand by the dear people of Lebanon under all circumstances.”
He also asserted that Tehran’s role is supportive, not directive, saying, “Our duty is to stand by our brethren and provide them with assistance, but we do not issue orders.”
During the August visit, he met with major Lebanese figures across the political and religious spectrum. He praised Lebanon as “a birthplace of resistance and a fortified trench against the Israeli entity.” Larijano also expressed the view that Lebanese decisions regarding their own future must be respected and that independence and strength are central to the regional vision he described.
