PA president calls on factions chiefs to join Cairo meeting: Exclusive
Palestinian factions are invited to join the Cairo summit alongside the state of Palestine.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) had received an official Egyptian invitation to participate in the meeting of the general secretaries of the factions scheduled to be held in Cairo, a source familiar with the matter told Al Mayadeen on Sunday.
Sources close to the Palestinian factions told Al Mayadeen that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued similar official invitations to the factions' general secretaries to participate in the upcoming meeting on July 30.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as well as the Palestinian National Initiative movements, received invitations to participate in the meeting of the meeting.
Abbas had called for the meeting following the Israeli aggression on the city of Jenin and the Jenin refugee camp on Monday, which lasted for two days and led to the martyrdom of 12 Palestinians and the injury of more than 100.
Palestinian presidency spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh made a statement saying the aim of this call was to agree "on a comprehensive national vision and unite the ranks to confront the Israeli aggression."
The call came right after Israeli occupation forces withdrew from the city of Jenin and its camp after launching an aggression that left 12 Palestinian martyrs and dozens of injuries. The Israeli aggression was heroically confronted by Palestinian Resistance fighters who carried out a number of deadly strikes and ambushes for occupation forces as part of a battle dubbed The Fury of Jenin.
Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of the martyrs, which included four children.
Video clips circulating on social media showed Palestinians carrying the martyrs' bodies on their shoulders during the massive funeral procession in Jenin.
Mourners condemned the Israeli atrocities, chanting slogans in solidarity with the Resistance and its fighters who valiantly resisted Israeli violence and booted the occupation's troops out of the camp.
In the midst of the violence, the Palestinian Authority decided to suspend communications and meetings with "Israel" following its aggression on Jenin, as it builds up on its decision to suspend security coordination with the occupation forces.
The statement that followed a meeting of the Palestinian Authority stated that "the understandings of Aqaba and Sharm El-Sheikh with the occupation" are no longer relevant and that it has decided to limit its ties with the US administration.
The PA added that all Palestinian agencies and bodies should assume their role in defending the Palestinian people from Israeli aggression on the West Bank.
It also revealed that it has decided to contact the UN Security Council to request the implementation of Resolution 2334 and the international protection resolution for the Palestinian people, halt unilateral measures in the West Bank, impose sanctions on the occupation, and call on the International Criminal Court to expedite the resolution of the cases referred to it.
